Portugal. the Man @ The Old Blue Last9/9/11
Portugal. the Man’s set was short and John Baldwin Gourley’s vocals were almost totally buried in the poor sound balance, but it was worth the commute and awkward hour-and-a-half in a strange pub for the opening jam (featuring crowd favourite AKA M80 The Wolf) and shimmering snippets from their new album, ‘In The Mountain, In The Cloud’. The band, known for their blend of psychedelic indie rock and blue-eyed soul*, treated 100 or so fans to just six songs (despite a bit of hopeful tampering with the setlist by a girl at the front of the crowd), all light, woozy solos and falsetto vocals. But it was during the more laidback The Sun (when Gourley’s voice was properly audible) that they stood out, a summery glow for a cold East London night. My only problem was with the sound desk, as half of the set seemed to consist of roaring rhythmic fuzz, but aside from that the band performed perfectly. Also it was free. And they tour perpetually so go see them! They’re returning to the UK next month too.
*I say they’re known for this, they aren’t particularly well known for anything. Which is surprising, seeing as they have had voluminous output over just a few years.

Yes, I’m interviewing my 3rd band/artist to date! I received word a few hours ago I’ll be interviewing Portugal the Man for my radio show The Spot with DJ Leopard on 90.3 the Core! Portugal the Man was a huge influence in my show’s name and style (“How the Leopard Got Its Spots”) and one of my…

CHICAGO! Portugal The Man’s van, trailer, and gear were stolen this weekend.

Please reblog and add any photos you may have of the van itself. I’ve been photographing them for five years now and I can’t believe how few photos I have of the *exterior* of the van.

These things happen, but this time it’s a little too close to home. If you are a close friend of mine, you know how near and dear these guys are to my heart and how mildly psychotic my visceral reactions are when something happens to them. HOODRATS WE WILL FIND YOU.
